Five Tips to Help Manage Depression Symptoms

Depression is real and for some people it can have paralyzing effects. If you’re suffering from depression, these five tips will help you cope with some of the symptoms:

1. Become mindful when you are tuning yourself out.

Socializing is likely to be challenging when you’re depressed but try to notice when you are withdrawing yourself from life. You need the support of people who love you and maintaining connection with people that understand you will be helpful for dealing with depression. Remember that there are other people that are also living with depression and it can be managed. If you are overwhelmed with shame, speak to a therapist to help you work with those feelings. This will help you step out of isolation and gradually take part in social activities that can do a lot to lift your mood and outlook on life.

2. Steer clear of alcohol and drugs.

When you’re feeling so low, it’s easy to turn to alcohol and drugs with the hope that it will make you feel better or at least numb the symptoms for a period. But ultimately these substances will never solve your problems and they are only temporary coping mechanisms to deal with depression. With the help of a therapist, you can begin to heal from the underlying emotional wounds. This will allow you to strive for a healthy lifestyle instead. Eat healthy, exercise regularly and find activities that will help you manage depression like yoga or meditation.

3. Find things that make you feel good.

While you may find it hard to get out and experience fun, try to push yourself to stay active even if you don’t feel like it. Do things that you used to enjoy and schedule activities that make you feel good. It could be as simple as going to your favorite ice cream store or going on a walk with a close friend, you will be surprised at how going out can offer some relief.

4. Build a routine.

When you’re depressed, getting out of bed alone would seem like an impossible task. To get moving every day, it may be helpful to build a daily routine. Be mindful about getting to bed on time so you can get enough sleep and be refreshed for the day ahead. Set your alarm so you will get up at the same time every day. Try not to skip meals and make sure that you are eating right, especially because antidepressants can affect your appetite. These strategies will help ensure that your basic needs are being met. Otherwise it can further perpetuate your depression symptoms.

5. Work towards facing your fears.

Whether you’re having a hard time going out or you’re anxious about talking to a therapist, try to face your fears. Avoiding them will only make you lose confidence in yourself, so try not to let your fears get the best of you.

Depression is not something that you should be ashamed of. It is an illness that can be managed. Talk to your close family and friends so that you can have the support you need.
