How does Counselling Help People?

Challenges and personal issues are all a part of life. But sometimes, these difficulties can be too much to handle on your own, even if you have the support of family and friends. During such times, it would be helpful for you to seek the support and guidance of a therapist.

Defining counselling

The counselling process helps a client in developing self‑knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth. It also guides a client in using personal resources to promote optimal self‑development.

The main goal of counselling is to give a client the opportunity to live a happier and more meaningful life by helping them manage some of their heavy emotions while alleviating the symptoms of anxiety and other mental health conditions.

Each counselling relationship is tailored to fit the needs of a client. It tends to be focused on addressing and resolving specific life issues by supporting a client to develop helpful coping mechanisms, management of feelings and their inner conflict.

The Role of a Therapist

A therapist is a professional who is trained to offer cognitive, emotional, and behavioural support in the form of talk therapy. Since each client has specific needs and issues that need to be addressed, there are times when a therapist will work with a medical doctor and other health professionals to ensure comprehensive care.

A therapist also ensures confidentiality, which means that a client can discuss their personal thoughts without worrying about it being known to others. Every conversation that you have with a therapist is private and purely confidential.

The only time the therapist will need to share any information is when there is a professional obligation. They will need to report anything that threatens your wellbeing or that of others, matters related to children’s sexual abuse, physical abuse, and neglect, and if the notes are ever subpoenaed by a court of law. It will be explained to you further as you begin your session.

Common issues addressed through counselling

Counselling covers a wide spectrum of struggles, concerns and issues. But some of the common issues that people seek guidance of a therapist include:

The scope of counselling practice

Counselling addresses issues in the domains of cognition, expression, emotion, learning, human development, and behavior. It also works with the interest of not only the individual involved but also their spouse and family.

Counselling also helps promote better mental health through improving personal, spiritual and emotional wellbeing.

It supports a client to improve personal awareness and use existing resources to manage emotions, problem solving, and making difficult decisions. It also uses evidence-based assessment and evaluation methods to see the progress and improvement of a client.
