3 Common Challenges That Impact Young Adult Mental Health

Young adults often face a lot of pressure, both internally and externally. And as you can imagine, these areas in their life causing this pressure can lead to mental health issues. It's important to talk about these challenges, especially as a young adult, as it can often be difficult to maneuver through life and transition into healthy adult life when carrying these problems.

1. Academic Performance and Stress

For many young adults, one's college years are rife with academic pressure. The stress that comes from this can be immense, and it's important to know how to deal with these emotions instead of letting them eat away at you. If you're a student dealing with stress, there are a few things to keep in mind.

First, talk to your professor and ask if there is any flexibility with the assignment or exam. If this isn't an option, try and find an open time slot at the campus library or study area to get your work done.

Secondly, try to find a routine that works for you. Getting into a study schedule and sticking with it will help you be far more productive and focused on your work, as opposed to scrambling at the last minute.

Lastly, it's important to take care of yourself. Make sure you're eating well and sleeping at least seven to eight hours a night. Take a break away from studying so that you can sustain the energy required to complete your work.

2. SOGIE

Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) is something many young adults struggle with. At a time when you're figuring out your identity, sexuality and gender can be a big part of that. However, being open about these things can be difficult, especially when your family or friends don't understand it. It can be a difficult situation to navigate, but there are ways to cope with it.

First, connect with people who are like you. Being able to talk about these things with someone who gets it and who can support you is invaluable. Secondly, know your resources. If you feel like you're getting overwhelmed, talk to someone, whether a friend, family member or adult, you can trust.

Lastly, it's important to be yourself. Don't hold back who you really are. Express yourself, and when you're ready, come out and tell people who you really are.

3. Finances and Student Debt

Many people go to college to improve their chances of getting a better job and making more money. However, if you don't have a job lined up and you're left with student loans to pay back, that may seem like an insurmountable task. Many people don't see the issue until it's too late, and they're stuck with a lot of debt and no way to pay it off.

In the midst of all of this, it's vital to stay organized. Make a list of everything you need to pay off, and try and find a job with flexible hours if possible.

And if you're feeling anxious and overwhelmed because of your financial situation, speak to someone. There are many agencies in place to help you and to help alleviate stress. Know that you are not alone and that feeling anxious about your financial situation isn't something to be ashamed of.

Final Thoughts

There are many things to consider when talking about young adult mental health. It's a sensitive topic for many people, and it's hard to navigate on your own. If you're experiencing stress or anxiety, or you're feeling alone and confused, talk to someone. The issue is real, and the best thing you can do is reach out and talk through your feelings.
