Counselling for Trauma Recovery
While everyone goes through a traumatic experience at some point in their lives, some will find it harder to cope than others. Although physical trauma can be hard to heal from, psychological trauma can be challenging to navigate because not a lot of people know how to seek help or whether they should seek help in the first place. At Chettiar Counselling, we will help you decide whether you need therapy or not, and we’ll offer support to assess your therapy needs.
What Is Trauma?
Trauma is a mental condition that is associated with an overwhelming circumstance or event, leading to a state of fear, anguish, helplessness, and even anger. Trauma is defined as an experience where the person is terrified and powerless and then overwhelmed. It is not so much about what has happened to them but how that impacts them.
How Did I Acquire It?
It can be one of the following:
- Physical abuse during childhood
- Bullying by fellow students
- Harsh breakups with a romantic partner
- Sexual assault
- Major surgeries and medical conditions
- Losing a dear loved one (friend or family member)
- Being caught in a tragedy (e.g., natural disaster, car accident)
Take note that trauma can also be something deep in your subconscious that may have been forgotten or blocked out because you were forced to repress it. Think of this as a coping mechanism, which may have been proper at the time but still comes out in other forms. Fortunately, many counsellors are equipped to deal with these difficult situations through talk therapy and other methods, allowing them to find out the root cause of your trauma.
Here’s how we can help.
Trauma leaves a lasting memory in your brain and body, especially in the events where you lost control of the situation and felt helpless in taking action to keep yourself or a loved one safe.
If not dealt with properly, a traumatic experience can lead to a lifetime of struggle and suffering, which is why it’s very important to seek help on the first signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Our therapists at Chettiar Counselling understand trauma and its effects on the mind and body. We have been trained to offer several counselling approaches that deal with trauma including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment Theory, and Mindfulness Approach.
Our counselling sessions are centered around helping you deal with the traumatic experiences in your life so you can move forward with a more positive mindset.
